Child

The Name-Sake child project has been produced after consulation and with the cooperation of social agencies in the Philippines to try to increase registration rates and secure the legal future of the child for his / her lifetime.

HOW IT WORKS

While it might seem novel to give a new “official” name to a young child , this is a common practice in the Philippines where often names , especially of young children , are fluid , especially if the name hasn’t been officially registered with the civic authorities.

It is not unusual for a child to be known by several different names , and what we regard as “nicknames” in the developed world are often used as someone’s primary name and can change over time. The current President of the Philippines , for example , is known by several names , including Digong , Rody , Rodrigo ( his official birth name ) and other nicknames.

From our database of “donated” names , our staff meet with parents of unregistered mothers , focusing especially on poorer urban areas , provincial locations and tribal villages where the rate of child registration is very low.

In meetings with civic leader and mothers we discuss the Name-Sake initiative and the parents ( and , if of age , the children ) are very excited at the chance to finally have an official name registered , so that they can take advnatge of everything that becomes available , such as registration in a school.

Similar to our baby program , a shortlist of three is chosen by the mothers , listed in order of preference. Most of the names on our database are traditional English first names in common use throughout the Philippines , though some parents prefer to choose the more unique names. The child also help to choose.

Once a name is chosen , we then go back to the donor and ask if they wish to proceed with the nomination , together with some information on the mother in terms of circumstances and location. A maximum of 2 weeks time is given. There is no obligation upon the donor should they decide not to go ahead.

Should the donor be happy to become involved , we then ask for a minimum donation of $150 / 130 Euro / GBP. This covers the registration fees with the various authorities. In addition . some

Baby

Name-Sake babies project has been produced after consulation and with the cooperation of maternity hospitals and social agencies in the Philippines to try to increase newborn registration rates and secure the legal future of the baby for lifetime.

HOW IT WORKS

We keep a large database of “donated” names and during pre-natal clincs , our staff meet with pregnant mothers who haven’t yet decided on prospective baby names. We discuss the database with the mothers and they decide which name to choose , giving consideration to donors suggestions. Typically a shortlist of three is presented. Most of the names on our database are traditional English first names in common use throughout the Philippines , though some mothers prefer to choose the more unique names.

Once a name is chosen , we then go back to the donor and ask if they wish to proceed with the nomination , together with some information on the mother in terms of circumstances and location. As time is limited ,a maximum of 2 weeks time is given. There is no obligation upon the donor should they decide not to go ahead.

Should the donor be happy to become involved , we then ask for a minimum donation of $300 / 250 Euro / GBP. Some of this is paid directly to the mother for essential baby and new mother products such as baby clothes , maternity clothes and diapers ( nappies ) etc and we also directly help her with a stipend to help her with living costs at this time as usually she has had to give up work.

We also use the kind donation to support wider projects in the area focused on child welfare and other poverty and health related needs.

There is no obligation on the mother to choose a name if they don’t see one that they like , and they also benefit from our support for projects in the area and funding for pre-natal care.

Once the baby has been born , the birth is registered by our staff and a copy of the birth certificate and a short video of appreciation is provided for verification purposes to the donor.
